1. PREFACE
In March 2005, Kolej Universiti Kejuruteraan Utara Malaysia has established seven research areas or clusters to foster a culture of research among academic staff. One of these clusters is sustainable engineering. This cluster is developed in order to maintain or improve the material and social conditions for human health and the environment. Sustainable engineering research cluster has carried out its research activities since the establishment of the Materials Engineering School in 2003. For a start, the cluster is working in parallel with the activities of Materials Engineering School and subsequently in collaboration with the Environmental Engineering School to conduct various researches such as recycling of materials, materials for construction and biomaterials. This cluster had obtained research grants from government sources and gained recognition through national and international exhibitions. Professor Dr Veena Sahajwalla (University of New South Wales Australia) has been appointed as an advisor for this cluster.
OBJECTIVES
To develop innovative methods of recycling and maximizing the use of industrial waste in the processing of new materials
To enhance the durability of available materials via developing alternative solutions for the processing method
To develop new sustainable processes and materials with innovation to increase durability
To develop an environment that is based on green technology
